Each month's theme split into four weekly sub-topics — 48 weeks of focused content.

January — Snow, Ice & Avalanche

  1. Week 1 — Avalanche awareness. Reading the daily forecast, recognizing avalanche terrain, beacon/probe/shovel, why a Level 1 course matters.
  2. Week 2 — Ice safety. Ice thickness guidelines, how clear vs. white ice differs, inlets, and springs, ice picks and throw ropes, ice fishing shelters and heaters.
  3. Week 3 — Cold injury & layering. Hypothermia and frostbite recognition, the layering system, why cotton kills, warming a cold patient.
  4. Week 4 — Snowmobiles & sledding. Pre-ride checks, riding within sight lines, helmets, open water and thin ice, sledding hill hazards.

February — Trip Planning & Navigation

  1. Week 1 — Map & compass. Declination, taking, and following a bearing, triangulation, reading terrain features.
  2. Week 2 — Digital navigation. Offline maps, battery management and cold-weather drain, GPS limitations, why paper is still in the pack.
  3. Week 3 — Trip plans. What a good plan contains, who to leave it with, turnaround times, bail-out routes. Anchor the Scan Your Plan program here.
  4. Week 4 — Emergency communication. Satellite communicators, PLBs, what SOS actually triggers, testing before you leave, what information a dispatcher needs.

March — Fishing

  1. Week 1 — Cold water & shoreline. Dressing for water temperature, spring runoff and flow changes, slick banks and ice shelves.
  2. Week 2 — Wading. Wading belts, staffs, foot placement in current, reading depth, what to do if you go in.
  3. Week 3 — Hooks, tackle & tools. Backcast awareness, eye protection, safe hook removal, overhead power lines, knife, and pliers handling.
  4. Week 4 — Fishing from boats & kayaks. PFDs in small craft, standing to cast, anchoring hazards, loading, and trim, cold-water capsize.

April — Paddling: Kayak, Canoe & SUP

  1. Week 1 — PFDs & essential gear. Fit and type selection, whistle, bilge pump, paddle float, spare paddle, leashes, and when not to use them.
  2. Week 2 — Cold water immersion. The 1-10-1 rule, cold shock, dressing for immersion, wetsuit vs. drysuit.
  3. Week 3 — Self-rescue. Wet exits, re-entry, assisted rescues, why you practice in controlled water first.
  4. Week 4 — Reading water & hazards. Strainers, low-head dams, offshore wind, tides, and current, scouting and portaging.

May — Boating

  1. Week 1 — Pre-season prep. Drain plug, battery, fuel, and fluids, bilge, lights, expiration dates on flares and extinguishers, registration.
  2. Week 2 — Life jackets & required equipment. Fit and approval types, child requirements, visual distress signals, sound devices, fire extinguishers.
  3. Week 3 — Rules of the road & operator education. Right of way, navigation lights, maintaining a lookout, boating safety courses. Time this with Safe Boating Week.
  4. Week 4 — Impairment, passengers & carbon monoxide. Boating under the influence, sun, and fatigue as impairment, engine cut-off switches, CO around swim platforms and cabins.

June — Camping

  1. Week 1 — Campsite selection & setup. Widowmakers overhead, dry washes and flood zones, wind exposure, securing shelters, lightning plans.
  2. Week 2 — Fire & fuel. Fire restrictions, building, and drowning out a fire, stoves, and lanterns, carbon monoxide in tents and campers.
  3. Week 3 — Food, water & wildlife. Canisters and hangs, scented items, water treatment methods, bear, and wildlife encounters, keeping a clean camp.
  4. Week 4 — Bugs, plants & camp hygiene. Ticks and permethrin, tick checks and removal, mosquitoes, poison ivy and oak, snakes, handwashing, and waste.

July — Swimming & Drowning Prevention

  1. Week 1 — Supervision & layers of protection. The Water Watcher role, pool fencing and gates, swim lessons, why drowning is silent and fast. Holiday weekend timing works in your favor here.
  2. Week 2 — Life jackets, not toys. Why floaties and water wings fail, choosing jackets for weak swimmers, life jacket loaner programs.
  3. Week 3 — Open water. Rip currents and how to escape them, cold shock in lakes, currents, and drop-offs, feet-first entry, no diving into unknown water.
  4. Week 4 — Rescue & response. Reach, throw, row — don't go. Recognizing distress vs. drowning, CPR for drowning, AEDs at pools and beaches.

August — Hunting Safety

  1. Week 1 — Bowhunting. Broadhead handling and quivers, string, and cam inspection, never dry-firing, shot placement and tracking, blaze orange during overlapping seasons.
  2. Week 2 — Rifle & shotgun. The four rules of firearm safety, positive target identification, knowing what's beyond your target, safe transport and storage, muzzle discipline in a group.
  3. Week 3 — Muzzleloader & black powder. Correct propellant and charge, loading procedure and never loading from a horn, hangfires, and misfires, cleaning and storage, eye protection.
  4. Week 4 — Treestands & wilderness safety. Full-body harness from ground to ground, lifelines, inspecting straps and ladders, haul lines, telling someone where your stand is, cardiac risk while dragging game.

September — Hiking & Backcountry

  1. Week 1 — Ten essentials & gear prep. What goes in every pack, footwear, and blister prevention, pack fit and weight, water capacity and treatment.
  2. Week 2 — Fall weather & shorter days. Big temperature swings, layering for wet and cool, hypothermia above freezing, headlamps, and earlier sunsets.
  3. Week 3 — Sharing the woods. Hunting season overlap, blaze orange for hikers and dogs, trail etiquette, dogs on leash.
  4. Week 4 — When things go wrong. The lost protocol — stop, think, observe, plan. Staying put, signaling, group management, terrain hazards and river crossings.

October — 4×4 & Roadside Recovery

  1. Week 1 — Vehicle prep. Tires and pressures, full-size spare, fluids, and belts, rated recovery points, jack, and board for soft ground.
  2. Week 2 — Recovery gear & technique. Kinetic ropes vs. tow straps, soft shackles, line dampers, why a ball hitch is never a recovery point, winching fundamentals and tree savers.
  3. Week 3 — Trail driving. Airing down, spotting, and walking obstacles first, line selection, seatbelts, and arms inside, Tread Lightly and staying on designated trails.
  4. Week 4 — Remote travel & self-rescue. Communications without cell coverage, extra water fuel and layers, staying with the vehicle, overnight, and cold-weather contingencies.

November — Skiing & Snowboarding

  1. Week 1 — Gear prep. Binding testing and DIN settings, edge, and base tune, helmet fit and replacement intervals, goggles, and layering.
  2. Week 2 — Conditioning & injury prevention. Pre-season strength and mobility, why early-season and end-of-day are the highest-risk windows, warming up, knowing when to stop.
  3. Week 3 — Mountain awareness. The Responsibility Code, right of way, merging, and stopping in safe places, respecting closures and ropes, lift safety with kids.
  4. Week 4 — Sidecountry & backcountry. One step past the rope is avalanche terrain, required gear and training, partners, and communication, terrain traps. Bridges straight into January.

December — CPR & First Aid

  1. Week 1 — CPR & AED. Hands-only CPR, compression rate and depth, finding, and using an AED, differences for children and infants, course options.
  2. Week 2 — Bleeding control & trauma. Direct pressure, tourniquet placement, wound packing, splinting a suspected fracture, spinal precautions.
  3. Week 3 — Environmental emergencies. Hypothermia and frostbite, heat illness, altitude sickness, recognizing stroke with FAST, heart attack signs including the subtle ones.
  4. Week 4 — Kits & calling for help. Building home, vehicle, and pack kits, annual expiration checks, what to tell a dispatcher, sending an SOS. Pair with your gift card and membership push.
